Teaching democracy: Let’s talk teacher needs
To mark Canada’s Democracy Week 2016, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Education and Elections Canada worked together to host an event called “Teaching Democracy: Let’s talk teacher needs.”
The objectives for the event were as follows:
- Raise awareness and build interest among pre-service teachers of the value and importance of teaching civic education.
- Consult pre-service teachers on their current level of knowledge and experiences with civic education, and what they need to feel prepared to teach civic education in their future careers.
- Draw attention to educational resources that can be used by teachers to discuss democracy in the classroom.
This event brought together pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as subject-matter experts in civic education and youth engagement for interactive discussions that focused on best practices in teaching civics, available resources and tools, and how to build teacher knowledge and confidence.
